Date

vaccines available in Cortland, NY

Melissa Travis Dunham

The Cortland County health department is having vaccine clinics this week and has many appointments available for Friday afternoon. You can find more info and a link to register here:

You do not have to be a resident of Cortland County (a friend of mine just got her's today and confirmed this); anyone who lives in NY state can go.

And in case you haven't heard, the age requirement is now 50 and older. It was just lowered to age 50 this week. That's in addition to eligibility due to work/volunteer role or comorbidity.

Melissa

One week later - Vigil tomorrow from 2 pm

Amala Lane

Dear Friends,  My (new) friend, Susan Lin is organizing a vigil to honor the victims of the Atlanta shooting tragedy. I will be there.  Susan Lin wrote the announcement below which is on FB here: https://fb.me/e/2d1O7zlNw  I will be there. - Amala

Candlelight Vigil for the Atlanta Shooting Victims
On Tuesday, March 16th, 8 people were murdered in a hate-fueled act by a racist and reckless man. Sadly this event was not a surprise to many in the Asian American Pacific Islander community as a spike in hate crimes against us has been raging for the last year or so. But this loss is not to be experienced silently.
As a local who grew up in Ithaca, I wanted to step forward and create a dedicated event to show our condolences and solidarity with the AAPI community in Atlanta, and ours here at home. It’s important to be visible in our grief, in our struggles to ask for humanity and equality. Our stories are worth telling, and our lives are worth sharing.
Here are the victims, may we honor their names and their lives too:
Soon Chung Park, age 74
Hyun Jung Grant, age 51
Suncha Kim, age 69
Yong Yue, age 63
Delaina Ashley Yaun, age 33
Paul Andre Michels, age 54
Xiaojie Tan, age 49
Daoyou Feng, age 44
I, Susan Lin, will do a short speech at the start of the event, and encourage those who feel compelled by these events and injustices to also speak. There will be an altar set up for people to bring flowers, cards, and other tokens of their sympathy.
Incense sticks will be provided, though anyone is welcome to bring their own. The City of Ithaca has notified me that due to the damaging nature of candle wax on the bricks, they are NOT allowed on the Commons. If you have any LED candles, you are welcome to bring your own or download an app onto your phone with the candlelight feature.
The burning of incense sticks is of Buddhist origin, but can be found as a practice for mourning throughout Asia. If you for any reason do not want to partake in this aspect of the vigil, you are still welcome to be present however you like.
If you are unable to attend, please consider donating to the #StopAsianHate nonprofit. Here is their website: https://www.stopasianhate.info/
If you cannot come during the 2-4pm time frame, the altar with photos & flowers for the victims will remain up on the pavilion until 8pm. You may contribute to the altar until that time.
If anyone is concerned about safety & security, members of the community will be present to help deescalate any possible situations. Everyone will be encouraged to maintain distancing & masks as well.
This event will continue to be updated as planning progresses

Old magazines?

Nancy Riffer

I'm doing collage again and find I have only about 4 magazines left. I wonder if anyone has magazines with pictures (food, gardening, travel, . . ) that I could have? We can workout a contactless way to exchange them.

With all the sun and color outside, I'm inspired to get back to some of my art work.

Thank you,
Nancy

FW: Save the Date! April 9th: ODE Take-Out Dinner!

Amala Lane

Dear Friends,

I've recently started supporting Open Doors English - it's an English language teaching program that holds classes (now online) on a pay-as-you-will basis.  This dinner fund-raiser sounds delish!  I ordered two meals and added a little extra to my donation. - Amala

A Tastebud Travel Adventure:
FRIDAY, APRIL 9TH

Open Doors English presents: "A Door to the World"

A take-out dinner to benefit our ESL classes for immigrants, refugees, and other non-native English speakers in our community

SAVE THE DATE!

Menu:  a choice of vegetarian entrees (Moroccan lentil stew or Iranian herb and chickpea stew) plus rice, naan bread, Persian cucumber salad, and cookies from Brazil, China and Russia.

Price:  $20 per meal.
Preorder (REQUIRED!!) by April 2
Order online today!
Pickup will be at the First Presbyterian Church, 315 N. Cayuga St: 4 - 7 p.m.

Your Dinner Matters!

The proceeds of this dinner will directly support access to English language classes for immigrants and refugees. Our students pay on a self-selected sliding scale anywhere from $0-$150 for four weeks of class.

Due to COVID and the increased financial strain many of our students are experiencing, tuition payments are averaging $30 per student per month--a significant drop. We anticipate a $15,000 shortfall in our tuition revenue alone as a result of the pandemic. Our goal for this fundraiser is $10,000.

Open Doors English operates on a shoestring, and our teachers make half the prevailing wage for professional ESL teachers. Your gifts matter and your generosity is deeply appreciated.

For each donation, you will be receiving dinner(s) valued at $20 each. Any portion of a donation more than $20 is tax deductible to the extent allowed by current tax laws.

Thank you!

Thank you for caring about our students and the role they play in our community. Your support means the world to us and to students like Jose. Together, we are opening doors and making a lasting impact for the better.

Consider making a donation to support students like Jose. Our work is possible because of people like you, and we are all stronger because of it.

Immigrant Allyship training, 3/16, 3-5pm

Amala Lane

Immigrant Allyship training, 3/16, 3-5pm

Learn about how to be inclusive and supportive of immigrants in our campus community and beyond, including undocumented individuals, those with tenuous immigration status, those from mixed-status families, and international students. This program offers a unique line-up of panelists who bring diverse perspectives to this topic: Amadou Fofana (Residence Hall Director, Court-Kay-Bauer); Christian Gonzalez (Associate Director for Student Empowerment and Undocumented/DACA Student Support); and Jaclyn Kelley-Widmer (Associate Clinical Professor, law) with law students Ethan Taveras and Yam Schaal. Presenters will explain legal, social, personal, and economic challenges faced by these immigrant communities and lead a robust discussion. In this interactive session, participants will discuss concrete ways to be an ally to the immigrant community and practice putting those skills to use.

This event is co-sponsored by the Migrations Initiative and Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga.

Public Vaccine Appointment Link for 3/5/21 Clinic Available for 65+ Individuals

If you are 65+ and have not received your first dose, please register here.

If you are under 65 or have received your first dose, please share this email with friends and family members 65+.

Individuals without internet access can call 2-1-1 to register.

The Tompkins County Health Department is publishing a link for individuals aged 65 and over to register for a vaccine appointment on Friday, March 5 (today). If you are under 65 and register, you will be turned away at the vaccination site. TCHD has sent a link to all 65+ individuals on the Tompkins County COVID-19 Vaccine Registry, but a number of appointments remain available. Individuals on the registry have been encouraged to pay close attention to their email and phones for appointment announcements.

The public link for individuals aged 65 and over can be found on the TCHD website, in addition to the link above:

https://tompkinscountyny.gov/health/covid19vaccine

Starting the week of March 1, TCHD is allowed to vaccinate individuals in the 65+ population and received 1,570 doses designated for this population. A portion of these doses were administered on-site at low-income senior living facilities, and the rest were offered directly to individuals on the COVID-19 Vaccine Registry.

Individuals may sign up for an appointment through this public link even if they are on the registry. Individuals may also sign up for an appointment even if they already have a scheduled future appointment at another site.

The Vaccine Registry is a form for anyone who lives, works, and/or goes to school in Tompkins County. Individuals can fill out the form with their name, contact information, and their eligibility group. Once the individual is in the registry, TCHD will send them a registration link when vaccine appointments are available for the group in which they are eligible. The registration link will be sent via email from swift911@... unless it is noted on the form that the individual does not have access to the Internet. In that case, the person would receive a phone call to assist them with registering. A video to explain how to fill out the vaccine registry form is available on the Health Department website.

To learn more about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, see our website and view the virtual COVID-19 “Office Hours” series with medical professionals who share their experience, answer questions and address concerns about the vaccine.

For local updates and information, check the TCHD website

Re: First to know: COVID vaccine appointments available near you for age 65+

Elizabeth Schneider

Eva had the same experience trying to get me an apptmt.  When the state vaccination site in Binghamton came up, they offered a number of dates.  After being repeatedly frustrated at local pharmacies, she chose to try the NY state site farther away (at the time that date was Feb 18, about 2 or so weeks ahead of the date she was trying to schedule this for me).  So, if the state sites in Binghamton and Syracuse come up, and if they are still offering dates in advance, trying Eva's method might be useful.  I got my first shot in late Feb and the second is on March 8.  The process at this state site was very efficient.  I was in and out in a 1/2 hour.  From our house downtown, the ride was about 1-1/4 hours.

Just thought I would share this with you all.

Elizabeth

If you click on the four Ithaca-area sites you will see that none of them have any appointments available.  I have tried two Auburn and one Moravia store, the sites say appointments are available, I try to schedule, and then am told that appointment is no longer available.  Frustrating!

I also check the state run sites in Binghamton and Syracuse (find link on Tompkins County Health Department Website.) A couple of weeks ago there were a few appointments available in Syracuse. It took me well over an hour and I had to restart many times because of the same problem-by the time you enter the information the appointment is gone. However I did get an appointment for March 29 in Syracuse. If you able to drive that far, you might also check there, but again, most of the time it says no appointments available. I am still going to try to get one closer because that seems like such a waste of gas to drive all the way to Syracuse for something that should be available locally. I would cancel the Syracuse one if I can find something closer.

Good luck to all,

It is outrageous that their site couldn’t hold the reservation till the time needed to finish entering the data.

However if Amala got an appointment, then there must be some time limit, so my suggestion is write down all information Medicare #, license #, SS#, copies of all health insurance cards (each place you apply to for vaccinations requires something different; Kinney’s wanted obscure info from our prescription insurance), and have it for immediate access right by your computer.

I’m taking my own advice as I write this email.   And just remember, part of the problem is that these websites are poorly written.   Betsy

Also, if you call 211, you can get some answers as to how to get an appointment if you don't have an easy time doing it on a computer.

With love,
Amala

Re: First to know: COVID vaccine appointments available near you for age 65+

Amala Lane

Dear Friends,

My appointment was not obtained via Kinney's. Pharmacies are only able to make appointments for those over 65. I did not qualify but I qualified to get an appointment under 1b eligibility or co-morbidities. I did that through the NYS website which took me to opportunities in Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester.  These are all state sites.

I suggest we take any questions off this thread. I just wanted to set the record straight. Email me: laneamala@... if you would like some help. Betsy's suggestion to have all your info in one place at hand is a good one. Also, try early morning or late night.

Warmly,
Amala

It is outrageous that their site couldn’t hold the reservation till the time needed to finish entering the data.

However if Amala got an appointment, then there must be some time limit, so my suggestion is write down all information Medicare #, license #, SS#, copies of all health insurance cards (each place you apply to for vaccinations requires something different; Kinney’s wanted obscure info from our prescription insurance), and have it for immediate access right by your computer.

I’m taking my own advice as I write this email.   And just remember, part of the problem is that these websites are poorly written.   Betsy

Dear Nancy,

I'm excited to invite you to something fun, something, FUNNY, and something LIVE!

What is it you say?

It's a reading of a very short play by African American Pulitzer Prize winning poet Rita Dove.

That's right, I'm directing a reading of Dove's "Georgie Porgie or A Moor in Vienna."

The play focuses on Beethoven's relationship with Black violinist George Bridgetower who debuted his famous "Kreutzer Sonata."

The play will be coupled with an excerpt from this beautiful piece of music performed by my hubby Michael Jamanis and his mother, the legendary Frances Veri.

Come be entertained and enlightened.

Sunday at 2pm Pacific/5pm Eastern.

Go here to register for your zoom link.

Please know that this is being offered on a Pay What You Can basis.

Any amount is gratefully accepted and a portion will go towards the Crispus Attucks Community Center in Lancaster, PA.

Peace and love and great art!

Amanda

P.S.--Guess who's playing Beethoven?

Re: First to know: COVID vaccine appointments available near you for age 65+

Barbara Chase

I had exactly the same experience as Betsy. I was also on the computer when the email came through. There were a few slots open in early March for the Trumansburg Kinney’s, none in Ithaca when I looked. I clicked on one, but by the time I entered all that information and clicked submit, it said no appointments where available.

Barbara C
