2021.11.1 Opening Worship Ithaca Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends met on-line, via Zoom remote for Monthly Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business on November 21, 2021.
At 12:35PM, 19 Friends settled into worship.
Clerk reviewed the agenda for Monthly Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business and recognized Melissa Travis-Dunham for holding the meeting in the light.
2021.11.2 Worship Sharing: The Vital Cell Considering the variety of ways people are participating in worship at this time (online or in person at the Third Street Meetinghouse & Hector Meetinghouse), the many reasons for their choice to do so, and the fact there are many more who are not worshipping regularly with us at all, IMM seems to have reached another inflection point, where we get the chance to ask: what now? To facilitate spiritual consideration, clerk shared a passage from Rufus Jones’ 1941 William Penn Lecture entitled, “The Vital Cell” & after some time spent in settled worship, posed three queries:
· Have you had the experience of utterly losing yourself in worship, either in a Meeting For Worship or elsewhere? What/whom did you find?
Friends offered reflections and ministry out of the silence.
2021.11.3 Nominating Committee: Nominations & Resignations On behalf of the committee, Carolyn Kenyon read the report & brought forward the following nominations – new & renewing members – to committees:

In terms of resignations, Michelle Brimage has asked to be released from Nominating Committee and the Third Street Meetinghouse Committee. Dreia Spies has asked to be released from Nominating Committee.
A friend raised a concern about how folks are engaged in participation at IMM; this is a concern that both Nominating & IMM as a whole are trying to discern, both in terms of having the conversation & finding a meaningful way to engage folks according to their leadings.

2021.11.4 Trustees: Burtt House Working Group On behalf of the committee, Antonia Saxon reported the following: To better explore the Meeting’s leadings with respect to the Burtt House property, IMM Trustees proposes establishing a Burtt House Working Group. This group would be charged with planning and facilitating next steps in this discernment, likely beginning with worship sharing sessions regarding IMM’s relationship to the Burtt House. Trustees requests Antonia Saxon, Steve Mohlke, Nancy Gabriel, Angela Hopkins, and Gina Varrichio be named to serve on this working group. If there are others wishing to serve, they should contact the clerk at clerk@.... Friends shared memories of and experiences with Marjorie & Ned Burtt and reflected on how these memories of the couple’s generosity, intent and loving spirit might lead IMM forward in its discernment process via this working group, not with a predetermined answer, but with a sincere effort to determine how best to honor the Burtt’s gift in the context of the present time.

2021.11.5 Neighborhood Outreach: Northside Signage On behalf of the committee, Karen Friedeborn reviewed the history and current status of Northside United. While largely dormant throughout 2020, recent gun violence has prompted the group to respond by engaging with law enforcement and reinvigorating neighbor-to-neighbor connections to highlight a united opposition to and resilience in the face of crime. To that end, Northside United organized to have yard signs produced and placed throughout the neighborhood. An example of the sign which says, “Northside United for a Safe Community. Sponsored by Ithaca Northside United” was shared with those gathered. The group has asked permission to place a yard sign on the Meetinghouse property at the corner of Third and Madison
Friends shared thoughts, questions, comments, affirmation for ongoing efforts and encouragement to participate in this neighborhood-wide signage display.
Rather than traditional “Neighborhood Watch” or other “policing” models, Karen clarified the “collective care” nature of Northside United’s efforts to bind each to the other.

2021.11.6 Ministry and Worship: Naming Committee On behalf of Ministry & Worship, Barbara Chase reported that in light of the shrinking Nominating Committee, the need for a Naming Committee has arisen. M&W asked for approval to establish a Naming Committee to discern new nominations to Nominating. Gina Varrichio, Pat Sewell (both “obligated” members in their roles as Clerk and Treasurer of IMM), Kris Altucher, and Bronwyn Mohlke have been asked to serve on this committee.
Friends approved the formation of a new committee comprised of the members named.@
2021.11.7 Peace and Social Justice: Donations for Approval In line with IMM practice, the following 2021 donations required Meeting approval. On behalf of the committee, Margaret McCasland shared information about & recommended 2021 grant amounts for the following organizations:

2021.11.8 Ministry and Worship: Hybrid Worship through the Winter M&W has received confirmation that the quality (both technological and spiritual) of hybrid worship has increased. Based on this information, the need to be nimble regarding our opportunities and modes for worship during the winter months, and the possibility that a new A/V system will soon be installed, M&W recommends that we continue hybrid worship through March 2022. We would continue to use our current system until such time that the more permanent A/V system can be installed.
Friends shared gratitude for & insights derived from this experiment into technologically-enhanced Meeting for Worship.

Do you check your email daily? IMM needs one person who checks their email once a day to be the Meeting House Scheduler. No committee meetings required. The Scheduler simply receives and responds to requests for meeting house space. See email below from Carol Clarke, the outgoing scheduler. If you can provide this service for Ithaca Monthly Meeting, please contact Carolyn Kenyon, Nominations Committee, at clkenyon09@... or 607 277-3014. 11/1/21 Lately there have suddenly been many more requests
than I've gotten this whole year - because people who have done
things outside all summer suddenly want to come inside. I find
that I have to look at the email inbox where usage requests are
made nearly every day and there are always one or two emails
with questions about existing reservations, or new reservation
requests, etc. Responding to these requests doesn't take more
than a few minutes, and definitely not more than 15 minutes a
day, but it does require steady attention.

URGENT Need for Quaker Mentors for NYYM Young Friends

I hope you have had a wonderful and restful week with people that you love. I have sent several emails and have received very little response. We need your help! We currently do not have nearly enough prospective mentors signed up to support young adults through the NYYM mentoring program. The success of this program hinges on experienced Friends stepping up to share what they know and walk with seekers on their spiritual journeys. Please share this information with all the Friends you know! Mentors are not expected to be Quaker experts or to have all the answers to sign up! And signing up doesn't even mean that a person will necessarily get a match. Our goal is to get a pool of prospective mentors so that we can faithfully match seekers with those who fit into where they are and what they need on their spiritual journey. If you have signed up in the past and don't feel like doing the form again, you can just email me and we can roll your information over from last year. And if you feel overwhelmed by the form, you can also reach out to me or Chase and we can take your information in another way. First COVID positive in Third Street Meetinghouse (that we know of)

Hello Friends, For the first time since March 2020 we know that somebody who attended in-person worship at the Third Street Meetinghouse last Sunday, 11/21, got a positive COVID test result on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. We think the risk to others in the Meetinghouse that day is minimal since everyone was wearing a mask and maintained social distance (for the most part), but we wanted to let our IMM community know in the spirit of complete transparency. Our Friend began to feel unwell on Sunday night and is getting appropriate care and is expected to recover soon. We are glad that we are continuing to wear masks during Worship inside and maintaining social distance guidelines and we just want to remind Friends to please, do not come to the Meetinghouse if you are not feeling well (whether you think it is COVID or not - colds and the flu are also reasons to stay home). Having hybrid worship means you may still join us from home if you wish. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions about this. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, if you'd like to connect with folks, some of us are going for a walk to Taughannock Falls. Afterward, we'll head to the lake parking lot and tail-gate a little celebration of thanks and friendship. Bring your own hot beverages and snacks. Meet up at 1:30 p.m. at the lower entrance of the falls. Dress warmly and wear waterproof boots. We'll be outdoors so masking isn't necessary but it does add a layer of warmth! :) RSVP laneamala@... so we can get a headcount of who to expect. Sunday Worship at Hector Meetinghouse

This coming Sunday, Nov 21, is the last Sunday Meeting for Worship at Hector Meetinghouse until Spring. Once again the weather is marginal (i.e. chilly), but since this is the last scheduled Sunday worship there for awhile, we thought we would go forward with it. All are welcome -- but the welcome comes with a dress-warm advisory, and maybe a blanket for your lap.

Thanksgiving Worship at the Hector Meetinghouse

There will be a Meeting for Worship on Thanksgiving Day at the Hector Meetinghouse at 10:30am. Friends are welcome to attend. For those that have not attended worship in the cooler months at Hector in the past, you are advised to dress warmly, as the crackle of the woodstove sometimes does more to warm our hearts than the meetingroom. Mentors Needed for Young Adult Friends!

26 Young Adult Friends have signed up to be mentored through NYYM's mentoring program and they are actively searching for mentors to walk alongside them over the next eight months. There is no prescribed formula for a good mentor, and they are seeking people of diverse experiences, perspectives, backgrounds, and personalities. Indeed, a mentor that is perfect for one person may not be what another person needs. Somebody might just need YOU or somebody that you know. Please help us spread the word!!! They do not expect people to come with experience or knowledge about being a good mentor and they will provide training and continuous support throughout the entire program. The primary goal is to be able to lovingly and faithfully match kindred spirits for a mutually-enriching experience. And it is a blessing to do so.
